Ealing's housing, and what it means for storage
The Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Northfields, West Ealing and Hanwell are the classic case — chimney breast in the middle of the wall, an alcove either side, high ceilings, and often a picture rail and cornice that a fitted run has to either stop below or be scribed around. Can you build wardrobes into chimney breast alcoves?
Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do here. The two alcoves are measured separately because they are rarely identical, so each carcass is made to its own width and the door fronts still align across the chimney breast.
My ceilings are very high. Is that space wasted?
Only if you use a standard-height wardrobe. We run the doors to the ceiling and put the least-used storage in the top section, which is usually where seasonal clothes and luggage go. It is the single biggest gain available in a period bedroom.
Will a fitted wardrobe damage the cornice or picture rail?
No. There are two honest options: stop the run below the rail so the original mouldings stay unbroken, or scribe the units around them. Which one looks right depends on the room and we will say which we would do.
