Fitted wardrobes in Harrow
Harrow-on-the-Hill is about two and a half miles north of our Greenford factory and showroom, with North Harrow, Kenton and Rayners Lane a little further on. Most Harrow jobs are 1930s Metroland semis: a bay-fronted main bedroom, a hipped-roof loft and a box room over the stairs that a standard 600mm wardrobe would swallow. We measure, make and fit all of it ourselves, and every photograph here is our own work.
What makes a fitted wardrobe in Harrow different?
Most of Harrow went up in the twenty years either side of 1930, when the Metropolitan Railway pushed out through Metroland, and the bedrooms follow a pattern you can almost set your watch by. The front bedroom has a bay window that interrupts the wall. The back bedroom is square and straightforward. The third is a box room over the stairs — and that is where a standard wardrobe fails.
A box room is commonly a little over two metres wide, with the stair bulkhead taking a bite out of one corner. Put a 600mm-deep wardrobe in it and you have lost most of the usable floor. The fix is a shallower carcass, typically 450 to 500mm, with sliding or push-to-open doors so nothing swings out into the room, and the hanging rail turned through ninety degrees on a pull-out rather than running front to back. You get a wardrobe and you keep a bedroom.

Metroland bedrooms, and the box room problem
The bay-fronted semi is the defining Harrow house, and its hipped roof matters as much as its bay. A hipped roof slopes on three sides rather than one, so a converted loft in North Harrow or Kenton is a very different shape from a converted loft in a Victorian terrace — the usable full-height area is a narrow strip up the middle, and the storage has to go into the slopes on either side.
Around Harrow on the Hill the stock is older and closer to Ealing's — chimney breasts, alcoves, taller ceilings. Out toward Wealdstone and parts of Kenton there is more post-war building, where rooms are plainer and squarer and the constraint is simply how much wall there is. We measure whichever of those you actually have.

The box room, measured properly
The free design visit takes 30 to 60 minutes and in Harrow it usually starts in the smallest room. We measure the box room and the stair bulkhead to the millimetre, because a few centimetres of carcass depth decide whether the room still works as a bedroom, and we say plainly which depth and door type we would choose.

Can you fit a wardrobe in a box room without losing the whole room?
That is the most common question we get in Harrow and the answer is yes. A 450 to 500mm carcass with sliding or push-to-open doors, and hanging on a pull-out rail rather than a front-to-back rail, keeps the floor usable. A standard 600mm depth with hinged doors is what makes a box room unusable.
What about the bay window in the front bedroom?
A bay breaks the wall into two shorter runs. Usually the best answer is a full-height run on the unbroken wall and something lower — drawers, or a window seat with storage — in the bay itself, so you are not fighting the shape of the room.
Our loft has been converted and slopes on three sides.
